| Renaissance in the Erzgebirge |
| |
| Marienberg has
a preserved historical uniqueness which can be seen in its square
ground plane with the one hectare big marketplace and in its right
angle street and infrastructure net. The city is municipal authority
of the so-called Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis (mid Erzgebirge region)
and both a traditional and vivid place attractive for economy and
tourism. |

 |
| |
| On 27th April 1521, Duke Heinrich the Devout
of Saxony arranged the writing of the foundation certificate of
Marienberg. Only a few days later the construction of the unique
city shape began according to the plans of Ulrich Rülein.
Italian Renaissance was an example to the city shape of Marienberg.
It had the typical features of an ideal city with regular a ground
plane, a central square marketplace, and a right angle street net.
A monument at the marketplace still reminds of the city’s
founder. |

We will see a lot of treasures
from Renaissance period and the time of the mining on a discovery
through Marienberg.
Start your tour with a visit of the mining museum. In this former warehouse
for cereals, built in 1809, the work and life of the miners is demonstrated
impressively. There is also a carving and needlework exhibition. Especially
impressive, however, are the handmade mechanic mountains. Additionally,
there is a unique documentation about the peoples driven out of our region
in the past centuries. |

part of the old city walls |
|
| |
| The "Red Tower" is
the last of formally four very strong round towers standing in
every corner of the old city wall. Today it is used for theatre
performances and exhibitions. |
| |
 |
| |
| The visit of the St. Marien
church with the Luther column in the churchyard is a must. In April
1558 the foundation stone of the church was laid. It is the youngest
of the three late Gothic hall churches in the Erzgebirge after
St. Wolfgang in Schneeberg and St. Annen in Annaberg. |

|
| |
| On your walking tour through
the city you see the historic old city with the council building
and various former bourgeoisie houses. The landscape around Marienberg
shows lots of proof of the old mining tradition. You see it for
example at many slag heaps, where you can nowadays search for minerals
with help by experts. In-between the slag heaps you can see a horse
powered pulley system- a technical masterpiece extracting ore for
visitors at a speed of one or two horse powers. |
